What the name actually means
Nobody trained in dentistry calls it a Hollywood smile. It is what patients ask for, so it is what this page is called, but it is worth knowing that the phrase describes a result rather than a treatment.
The result is a row of front teeth that are even in shape, even in length, and lighter than they were. There are several ways to get there and they differ enormously in cost, in how long they last, and in how much of your own tooth is gone at the end.
The treatments behind the name
Veneers. Thin shells of porcelain bonded to the front of the tooth. A small amount of enamel is removed first. This is what most people mean by a Hollywood smile.
Crowns. The tooth is reduced on all sides and capped. Far more of the tooth is taken away, so crowns are for teeth that are already heavily filled, broken or root treated, not for healthy teeth that are the wrong colour.
Whitening. Changes the colour and nothing else. It removes no tooth structure at all, and for a good number of people who walk in asking for veneers, it is most of what they actually wanted.
Alignment. If the problem is that the teeth are crooked rather than discoloured, moving them is the answer. Braces or aligners take longer and cost less than covering crooked teeth with porcelain to make them look straight.
What decides which one you need
Three things, in this order.
What is actually wrong. Colour, shape and position are three different problems. Whitening fixes one of them. Filing down healthy teeth to fix a position problem is the most common overtreatment in cosmetic dentistry.
How much tooth you have left. A heavily filled tooth is a candidate for a crown anyway. An untouched tooth is the one worth protecting.
Your gums. Porcelain bonded at an inflamed gum line looks wrong within a year. Gum treatment comes first, always, and it is not optional.
The part clinics do not put on Instagram
Veneers and crowns are irreversible. Once enamel is off, that tooth needs covering for life, and every replacement costs roughly what the first set cost. A twenty five year old having ten veneers is committing to perhaps four replacements across a lifetime.
That is a reasonable trade for someone who has thought about it. It is a bad surprise for someone who was shown a photograph and quoted a price.

Who should not have one
People with active gum disease or untreated decay, until those are dealt with. People who grind their teeth heavily, until that is managed, because porcelain chips. Smokers, who will be disappointed by how the surrounding teeth and the gum line age around the new work.
And anyone whose main complaint is colour. Whiten first. If you are happy, you have saved a great deal of money and all of your enamel.
