Your first visit

This page answers the things people phone to ask before booking. If yours is not here, call and ask.

When you arrive

We are on the ninth floor of Center Nour El Hayat on Unesco Street. Come up, and someone will take your details. There is usually a short form about your medical history, which matters more than it looks: medication and heart or blood conditions change how treatment is planned.

What the appointment involves

An examination of your teeth, gums and the soft tissues of the mouth. A conversation about what brought you in. X-rays or a 3D scan if they are needed to see what is happening below the surface. Then an explanation of what we found and what the options are.

You leave with a plan and a written cost. Nothing is started on the day unless you are in pain and have agreed to it.

About pain, honestly

Most of what happens at a dental appointment does not hurt. Local anaesthetic works, and if you feel anything sharp you say so and we add more. That is not an inconvenience, it is how it is meant to work.

Surgery is sore afterwards rather than during. We tell you what to expect and for how long, and we would rather over-prepare you than have you surprised at home.

Questions people ask

Allow an hour. A first consultation is mostly examination and conversation: what brought you in, what you have had done before, your general health and the medication you take. If a scan is needed we usually do it the same visit.

Sometimes, if you are in pain and something simple will settle it. Otherwise the first visit is for working out what is going on and agreeing a plan. We would rather you left understanding the options than have us start something you had not agreed to.

A list of any medication you take, including supplements, and anything your doctor has told you about your heart, blood pressure, diabetes or blood thinning. Any recent X-rays from another clinic are useful. And your insurance details if you have cover.

Say so at the start, not halfway through. It is an extremely common thing to say and it changes how the appointment runs: more explaining, slower, and stopping whenever you need to. Quite a few people arriving here have avoided treatment for years.

You get a written plan with the cost before treatment starts, and we go through it with you. If you have insurance, bring the details and we will tell you what is usually covered, though the insurer decides. Ask about spreading the cost of larger treatment.
